Biography

Philipp Schmidt was born in 1978 in Radolfzell, Germany. He started his professional guitar studies with Andreas Higi, at the Conservatory of Trossingen. Soon, the Erasmus scholarship programme took him to Madrid, where he studied in the class of Gabriel Estarellas at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música. He then continued his studies at the Musikakademie of Basel as a student of Oscar Ghiglia and Stephan Schmidt, graduating with a teacher and concert diploma with honours.

In various master classes, Philipp Schmidt was inspired by musicians such as David Russel, Pavel Staidl, Margerita Escarpa, Marcin Dylla, Olaf von Gonnissen and others. Moreover, working with contemporary composers like Sofia Gubaidulina, Rudolf Kelterborn, Madelaine Ruggli, Helena Winkelmann has been of utmost importance to the guitarist.

Both as a soloist and member of different ensembles, Philipp Schmidt regularly performs in and outside of Switzerland. His concerts have taken him to the Schleswig Holstein Music Festival, the Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, the Neumarkttheater of Zurich and the Goetheanum, Dornach.

In addition to his freelance musical activities, Philipp Schmidt works as a guitar teacher at the Kreismusikschule Pratteln.
